This is the image for the news article titled Board of Education Grants Appeal by Student on Taking Part in Graduation CeremonyStatement from the Board of Education President Denny Beres:
The Board has unanimously reached a decision. Based on the unique circumstances presented, the Board approves the appeal and will allow this student to participate in commencement exercises even though the student has not yet met all graduation requirements.

Let me state first that our policy (345.6) on graduation requirements and participation in the graduation ceremonies is clear as it is written. Under the Boards’ current policy, if a student has not met the requirements for graduation, then that student cannot participate in the graduation ceremony. Administration does not have the discretion to pick and choose, which students get to participate in graduation ceremonies based on graduation requirements. Administration has not made any exceptions to this policy, nor have they acted to single out any student to deny participation as has been alleged. Let me state unequivocally then that the decisions of the Exploration Academy Director and Superintendent are in complete compliance with our policy. Their decisions on this matter are as the Board demands within the bounds of our current policy.

As this policy belongs to the Board, only we, not the administration, can suspend, make exceptions or re-write it. We have agreed to make an exception and permit the student to participate in graduation ceremonies. The board will undertake a review of the policy moving forward.

We applaud the administration, the faculty, the family and most of all the student for working through this process.

We cannot say anything more due to student confidentiality laws.
