Badger Ridge 8th Grade Students Win National Recognition in Stock Market Game

What would you do if you were given $100,000? Would you spend it all at once? Would you think about putting some of it in the bank? For more nearly 25 years, The Stock Market Game (SMG), as part of the business class for Badger Ridge 8th grade students has taught the fundamental basics of investing and how students can get their money to work for them! But this year…five of the Badger Ridge students TOOK NATIONAL RECOGNITION! The entire class does the Stock Market Game, but one of the groups excelled in raising their money, moving into 2nd place from all 4-12th grade groups nationwide-- then ended up winning the middle school category!

More than 16 million students, 600,000 this year alone, have played the Stock Market Game since inception, and Badger Ridge students should be proud for taking the lead out of districts from all over the United States.

“We had lists of stocks that we were watching and kept a cushion of money on the side in case we wanted to buy more,” said 8th grader Elias. “It was challenging as we each had to decide on what stocks we wanted to gamble on in our group to make money. I wouldn’t even take advice from my dad who loves stocks as we learned tons more in class and I told him we were more professional!”

Diane Lehnherr, a Family and Consumer Science teacher for 28 years with Badger Ridge Middle School, brought in The Stock Market Game to teach a real-world situation where students practice the content and skills they are taught in math, English Language Arts, economics, social studies, and other school subjects. Most importantly, The Stock Market Game, sponsored by SIFMA Foundation, helps them develop positive money habits and prepare them for their future.

“This is the best team that I’ve ever had in terms of their attention, research and dedication to the program,” said Lehnherr. “They worked really well as a team together.” Lehnherr’s hopes for the game are to have students working together to build and manage an investment portfolio in a real-world, dynamic marketplace. The students analyzed and made decisions, exploring the consequences of their choices, and seeking new ways to strategize for success.

8th grader Andrew from the winning group added that it was fun as a group to research the different types of stocks, from companies like Starbucks or Facebook. “We couldn’t invest all of our money into one stock, so we invested in various ones to try to make more,” he added.

Congratulations to the winning team!
