Two More VAHS Grads Win Merit Scholarship

They are Jason Barr, who will attend the Michigan Technological University, and Alankrit Shatadal, who will attend Washington and Lee University. That brings the total for the Class of 2017 to four, after brothers, Jacob and James Wellnitz were announced earlier this year.

All four students won their scholarships through the college-sponsored program within the National Merit Scholarship umbrella. The scholarships are between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years at the institution.More than 1.6 million students entered the National Merit Scholarship competition in 2015 through taking the Preliminary SAT, or PSAT. Last fall, the scholarship corporation announced 16,000 semi-finalists, who were asked to submit a more detailed scholarship application to narrow the group to 15,000.Six VAHS students were among those finalists: Barr, Shatadal, William Cioci, John Wang and the Wellnitzes
