As the school district places high importance on behavior management throughout all its schools, 45 principals and staff from across the district signed up this week to learn more about restorative practices: principles that establish and maintain a positive culture and climate in classrooms and buildings. The goal is to develop leaders in each building that can model and share ideas on implementing these practices across our schools and district.

Restorative practices

Staff spent time in circles, the basis of the restorative practices concept, to dive in deep on a variety of situations that can occur with students and staff. Simply put, the restorative approach believes that decisions are best made and conflicts are best resolved by those most directly affected by a negative behavior that occurs. This leads to actively engaging students and allowing them to take greater responsibility for their actions and how they affect so many others around them. The practice has been applied in justice systems, families, workplaces, and now in schools across the world.
